Mohair is a kind of wool — long, silky, a little shiny — from the hair of the Angora goat, not from a sheep. People knit it into jumpers that feel light and fuzzy, or weave it into cloth. In a shop it is a real material name, not a poetic word, and it is often sold as something rather expensive. The English spelling looks like “mo + hair”, and that is a story the language told itself: people heard hair in it and slowly pulled the spelling that way. The older forms (mocayre, French mocayart, Italian mocaiardo) come from Arabic mukhayyar, “choice” — the chosen, best kind. , the wavy silk, is the same Arabic word that took another road into English.
組成Earlier mocayre, from Middle French mocayart and Italian mocaiardo / mocaiarro, both from Arabic مُخَيَّر (mukhayyar, “choice”), past participle of خَيَّرَ (khayyara, “to choose”). English later reshaped the spelling under hair, which is folk etymology, not the real root. Doublet of moire.
