Merino is first a kind of sheep, long famous for unusually fine, soft wool. The name then moved to the wool itself, and to cloth or yarn made from it. A merino jumper or a pair of merino socks is warm, light, and often slower to smell than other wool, which is why walkers and winter shops love the word on a label. You can mean the animal or the material; the sentence usually makes that clear. The sheep were bred in Spain, and the English word still feels like a fabric-and-farm word, not a street word.
