To anaesthetize someone is to give them an — to make a part of their body numb, or to put them into a deep sleep for an operation. Doctors and dentists are the people who do this. You can anaesthetize a tooth, a hand, or a whole person. British spelling is anaesthetize (some British writers also use anaesthetise); American spelling is anesthetize. People sometimes stretch the word in writing: a loud, busy city can “anaesthetize” you, meaning it dulls your feelings — but that is picture-language, not the hospital use. Though actually, the medical verb is about stopping feeling on purpose and under control, not about making someone vaguely sleepy. After a local you are still awake; after a general one you are not.
