The usual American spelling of (British writers may also use anaesthetise). It is the verb: to give someone anesthetic so they do not feel pain, or so they go under for an operation. A dentist can anesthetize your mouth; a surgeon's team can anesthetize a patient for a long operation; a vet can anesthetize a cat. The home of the word is medicine. People sometimes stretch it to feelings — as if noise or shock could anesthetize you — but that use is rather writerly. In ordinary American hospital English it means the medical act.
