An anaesthetist is the person in the operating room whose job is to give the and to watch your breathing, heart, and sleep while the surgeon works. In British English, the anaesthetist is usually a doctor. In American English the doctor is more often called an anesthesiologist, and may mean a nurse who is trained to give . If you read a US hospital page, check which word they are using — the jobs are not always the same person. In Taiwan the doctor is 麻醉科醫師. The word is almost only medical; you will not hear it in daily chat unless someone is talking about an operation. Though actually, students sometimes think this person “just puts you to sleep,” but their real work is also to keep you safe while you cannot speak for yourself.
