An anaesthetic is a drug or gas that stops you feeling pain. A local anaesthetic numbs one part of the body — a dentist may use it so you do not feel the tooth. A general anaesthetic puts you into a deep sleep so surgeons can operate and you feel nothing. The word is also an adjective: anaesthetic cream, anaesthetic gas. British spelling keeps the extra a (anaesthetic); American spelling is anesthetic. Though actually, this is not the same as a simple you swallow for a headache. Those take the edge off pain, but they do not usually make a part of you go numb or send you to sleep. In Taiwan hospitals people mostly just say 麻醉, and they will talk about 局部麻醉 (one part) and 全身麻醉 (the whole body, asleep).
組成From Greek an- (“not, without”) + aisthēsis (“feeling, sensation”), so the pieces say “without feeling.”
