The usual American spelling of anaesthetist — a person whose work is to give anesthetic. Though actually, the job the word points to is not the same on both sides of the ocean, and that is the messy truth students need. In Britain, an anaesthetist is typically a doctor. In the United States, anesthetist very often means a nurse anesthetist: a nurse trained to give anesthetic, while the medical doctor is called an anesthesiologist.
