The usual American spelling of . As a noun, it is the medicine that stops you feeling pain: the gas or the drip that puts you under for an operation, or the local shot at the dentist so only one place goes numb. As an adjective, it describes that kind of medicine — an anesthetic gas, an anesthetic cream. Doctors split it in practice: a local anesthetic leaves you awake; a general anesthetic sends you fully under. British English keeps the extra a (, anaesthesia); American English drops it (anesthetic, anesthesia). The medicine is the same idea; only the letters change. You will see this spelling on American hospital forms and medicine packets. A rather literary stretch — calling a dull style 'anesthetic' — exists, but that is not how people use it in a clinic.
