A short form used a few ways. Most often it's short for 'amplifier' — the machine that makes an electric guitar, microphone, or speaker sound louder. It's also short for 'ampere,' the unit that measures how much electricity is flowing (you'll see it on chargers and batteries). And as a verb, 'to amp up' means to increase energy or excitement — 'the coach amped up the team before the game.'
