You can think of acquire as get, but wearing a suit. Something ends up in your hands — a building, a company, a skill, a nickname — and the word keeps a little distance from the getting: it does not say you grabbed it, only that it came to be yours. That distance is why acquire fits a bank buying a rival, and also fits a habit that crept up on you over years.
