    Wikipedia is the free encyclopedia on the internet. It started in 2001 and now has millions of articles in more than three hundred languages, including 中文. Nobody is paid to write it: ordinary volunteers write the articles, and almost any article can be changed by almost anyone. Because of that it grows and is corrected very fast — when something happens in the world, the article is often updated the same day, which a paper encyclopedia could never do.

    The same openness is its weak point. An article may be wrong, may be one-sided, or may have been damaged a few minutes ago by someone playing a joke. Good articles give a list of sources at the bottom; that list is often the most useful part of the page, because it points you to where the information really came from. Teachers usually say the same thing: read Wikipedia to understand a topic, then cite the sources it points to, not Wikipedia itself.

    It is a proper name, so it takes a capital W and no "the": we say "on Wikipedia", not "on the Wikipedia". In everyday speech people it to "Wiki" — "I found it on Wiki" — which is common but loose. In Taiwan people say 維基百科, or often just 維基.

組成A made-up name from 2001, joining wiki (a website anyone can edit — from Hawaiian wikiwiki, "quick") with the ending of encyclopedia. That second word came through Latin from Greek enkyklios paideia, roughly "education in the whole circle of things": enkyklios from en "in" plus kyklos "circle", and paideia "the raising and teaching of children", from pais "child". So the name says, more or less: the fast, open version of the whole circle of learning.
