A wiki is a website that the people reading it can also write. If you see a mistake on a page, you click "edit", fix it, and save; the page changes for everyone. The site keeps a record of every change, so if someone something wrong or silly, another person can put the old version back. That two-way idea — read it, then change it — is the whole point of the word. A wiki is not always public. Many companies and schools run a private one where staff or students keep notes, rules, and instructions in one place, and anyone in the group can tidy it up. So you will hear "put it on the wiki" at work, meaning "write it on our shared notes site so people can find it." The word is a countable noun: a wiki, two wikis, the company wiki. English speakers also use it as a verb, though this is casual: "I'll wiki it" almost always means "I'll look it up on Wikipedia", not "I'll build a wiki". Careful writers avoid that use in formal writing. One small thing: "wiki" and "Wikipedia" are not the same word. Wikipedia is one very famous wiki. There are thousands of others.

組成Coined in 1995, shortened from WikiWikiWeb, the name of the first such site. That name joined Hawaiian wikiwiki, "quick, hurry", with the English web. The programmer who made it had heard wiki wiki on airport buses in Honolulu, and picked it because his site was meant to be the quickest possible way to put a page on the web. So the "wiki" half is Hawaiian, and only the "web" half is English — which is why the word does not break into pieces that mean anything in English.
