From Middle English warnen, from Old English warnian 'to take heed; warn'; cognate with German warnen.

源自古英文 warnian「留意、警告」，和德文 warnen 同源。

Picture someone telling you now about something that is still ahead, so it does not hit you unprepared. The information always arrives before the event — that timing is the whole point, and how serious the thing ahead is decides which of the two senses you are hearing.

可以想成：有人在事情發生之前先告訴你，讓它不會突然砸到你身上。這個字的關鍵一直是「消息比事情早到」；至於前面那件事有多嚴重，就決定了你聽到的是哪一種用法。
