A voluntourist is the person who goes on this kind of trip — a who spends part of a holiday doing unpaid helping work in the place they are visiting. It is the person-word that goes with voluntourism, and it is countable: one voluntourist, a group of voluntourists. Typical voluntourists in news stories are students on a gap year, church groups, or working people using two weeks of leave. Like voluntourism, the word often comes with a critical edge. When a writer calls someone a voluntourist rather than a volunteer, they are frequently pointing at the tourism half — someone who is really on holiday, staying a short time, without the skills or the language to be much use, and taking photographs with local children. Not always, though: travel companies use the word in their own advertising. Read the sentence around it to see which way it is pointing.
