1. 1

Voluntourism is travelling somewhere as a tourist and spending part of the trip doing unpaid work that is supposed to help — building a school, teaching English, working at an animal shelter, cleaning a beach. It is a fairly new word, made by squashing volunteer and tourism together, and it became common in the 2000s when gap-year and study-abroad programmes started selling these trips. Here is the part your dictionary may not tell you: the word today is often used with a raised . Plenty of people use it — "she did some voluntourism in Nepal" — but journalists and aid workers frequently use it as a criticism, meaning trips that make the visitor feel good and look good on social media while helping the local people very little, or even doing harm (untrained teenagers building walls that local builders have to redo; orphanages kept open to attract paying visitors). So the word carries a debate inside it. It is uncountable: you do voluntourism, or go on a voluntourism trip, but you don't have "a voluntourism".
