Uzbekistan is a country in Central Asia, with Kazakhstan to the north, to the south-west, and Afghanistan, and around it. Its capital is , and its most famous cities — Samarkand and Bukhara — were great stops on the old Silk Road, full of blue-tiled domes. It was part of the Soviet Union until 1991, when it became independent. Its population is now over 35 million, making it the most populous country in Central Asia; the older figure of about 28.6 million was from around 2014. Two facts are worth carrying: it is one of only two countries in the world that is doubly , meaning you must cross at least two countries to reach a sea, and it is a major producer of cotton, which is one reason the Aral Sea shrank so badly. The people are , the language is , and the adjective is either or Uzbekistani. Say it oo-ZBEK-ih-stan or uz-BEK-ih-stan; both are heard.
組成Uzbek + -stan. The ending -stan comes through Persian and means "place of, land of," so the name means "land of the Uzbeks." It is the same ending you see in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Kazakhstan.
