Kazakhstan is a country in central Asia, with Russia to the north and China to the east. It is huge — one of the largest countries on earth — and much of it is open . It was part of the Soviet Union and became an independent country in 1991. Kazakhs give the country its name; Russian is also widely used. The capital is . For a few years the city was Nur-Sultan, then the name came back, so older books and some dictionary lines still just say , which is right again now. A 2014 count put the population at about 18 million; it has grown since then. In English the stress usually falls near the end: kaza-STAN. It is the normal country name, used in news and in class, not a special or poetic word.
