Think of two photographs of the same place, taken fifty years apart. In the first there are fields, a track and a few low roofs. In the second there are apartment blocks, a supermarket, traffic lights and a station. The word is about the second photograph, and about the fact that it used to be the first one. Both meanings read the same pair of photographs, only from different sides: one looks at what now stands on the ground, and the other looks at where the people in the picture now live and work.
