To take off the paper, plastic, cloth, or foil that is around something. You unwrap a present, a sandwich, a bar of chocolate, a new phone. It is the plain, everyday opposite of `wrap`.
Two small things make it richer than it first looks. First, the object has to have been wrapped by someone — you unwrap a birthday gift, but you `open` a box and `peel` a banana. Second, the word carries a bit of the feeling of the moment: unwrapping is slow, and there is something inside. That is why it appears so much around Christmas, birthdays, and 拆箱 videos.
People also stretch it a little. A person who has been sitting curled up may "unwrap" their arms and legs. And a story or an argument can be described as being unwrapped — meaning layer by layer, someone shows you what is inside — though `` is the more common word for ideas.
Grammar note: it doubles the p. unwrap → unwrapped, unwrapping. That doubling catches many .
