The paper or plastic that covers something you buy, and that you take off and throw away — a sweet wrapper, a chocolate bar wrapper, a burger wrapper. It is the thin outside layer, not a box and not a bag: a wrapper is close to the thing and usually torn open. Streets and parks are full of dropped wrappers, so you often meet the word in signs and complaints about litter. It has some near neighbours worth keeping apart: packaging is the whole covering, including boxes; a label is the printed part that tells you what is inside; a cover is what goes round a book. The word also has a technical life in computing, where a wrapper is a piece of code that sits round other code to make it easier to use — a real, everyday word for programmers. And in older books, a wrapper is a loose dressing gown a woman put on in the morning; you will only meet that in nineteenth-century writing. In American English, some people write wrapping paper as "gift wrap," but the paper round a present is wrapping paper, not a wrapper.

From Middle English wrappere; wrap + -er.
wrap「包」＋-er「…的東西」，中古英文就有。
組成wrap (to cover something by folding material round it) + -er (the thing that does it). Here -er names a thing, not a person — the same as in cooker or heater.
