To make someone feel — a bit nervous, a bit worried, not quite comfortable. The feeling is usually mild and hard to name. If a strange noise unsettles you, you are not screaming in terror; you just feel wrong, and you keep listening. That vagueness is the heart of the word: things unsettle you when they disturb your calm without giving you a clear reason to be afraid. The subject is very often a thing rather than a person — a film, a question, bad news, someone's stare, a change at work. 'The news unsettled her.' You can also unsettle a person on purpose, which is what a chess player, a lawyer, or a fast in cricket tries to do to an opponent: make them lose their rhythm and confidence. There is a second, less common use about arrangements rather than feelings — unsettling a market, unsettling a country — meaning making something that was stable become shaky again. Notice the picture inside the word: something had settled, like dust or mud in water, and you have stirred it up again. It is slightly formal; in everyday speech people are more likely to say 'it freaked me out a bit' or 'it made me uncomfortable'.
