A Unitarian is a member of a Christian group that rejects the doctrine of the Trinity. Most Christian churches teach that God is three persons in one — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Unitarians hold instead that God is one single person, and so they do not treat Jesus as God, though they honour him deeply as a teacher. The name says exactly that: uni- for one. The word works as a noun ("she is a Unitarian") and as an adjective ("a Unitarian church"). It carries a capital letter because it names a religious body. The movement began in central Europe in the sixteenth century, in Transylvania and Poland, and later grew in England and America. Something important has happened to it since: in Britain and especially in America, modern Unitarian churches have moved far beyond a single point of doctrine and now welcome people of many beliefs, including people who are not sure they believe in God at all. The main American body is called Unitarian Universalist, often shortened to UU. So if you meet the word in a history book, it is about the Trinity argument; if you meet it about a church today, it is more likely about an open, liberal congregation. Unitarians are few in Taiwan, so most students meet this word only in reading about Western history, literature, or American writers.
