It describes something continuous over a long stretch of time — unceasing rain, unceasing noise from the construction site, unceasing effort, her unceasing support for her students. It sits before a noun almost always; you would not normally say "the rain was unceasing" in speech, though a novelist might. This is a formal, written word. In conversation people say non-stop, constant, or endless. Save unceasing for writing where you want a slow, weighty sound. The tone is worth noticing because it goes both ways. With unpleasant things — noise, rain, complaints, pain — it means wearing, too much, please stop. With good things — effort, kindness, devotion, support — it becomes praise, and it carries a faint echo of religious and old literary English, where unceasing prayer is a set phrase. So the word itself is neutral; the noun beside it decides the feeling. Compare it with ceaseless, which means the same thing and is more common in modern writing, and with incessant, which is nearly always negative and usually describes sound or talk.
