The fat, round part of a plant that grows under the ground on the stem, stores food for the plant, and can grow into a new plant by itself. A potato is the tuber everyone knows; sweet potatoes, yams, taro and have them too. Two things make a tuber a tuber, and students usually only remember the first: it is swollen and underground, yes — but it is also a piece of STEM, not a root, and it carries buds (the 'eyes' on a potato) that can sprout. That is why you can cut a potato into pieces and plant them. A carrot is not a tuber; it is a root, and a cut piece of carrot grows nothing. The word is mainly used in biology, gardening and cooking-with-explaining; in ordinary talk people just say 'potato'.
組成From Latin tūber, meaning a bump, a hump, a swelling — the same picture as a lump under the skin. The plant part got the name because it is exactly that: a swelling on the stem. (There is a separate, unrelated English word 'tuber' meaning simply 'someone or something with a tube', built from tube + -er — but that is not this word.)
