The adjective for tuberculosis — TB, the serious infectious lung disease. It works two ways. It describes the disease and what belongs to it: a tubercular infection, tubercular damage to the lungs. And, more old-fashioned, it describes a person who has the disease: 'a tubercular young poet'. That second use is common in nineteenth-century novels and history books, and doctors today avoid it, because naming a person by their illness is now felt to be ; they say 'a patient with tuberculosis'. There is also a plainer, non-medical meaning that comes straight from the word's parts — covered in small lumps, or shaped like a small lump. A may describe a tubercular stem, meaning a bumpy one. In everyday Taiwan English you will meet the medical sense far more often, and mostly in reading rather than in speech, where people just say 'TB'.

組成From Latin tuberculum + -ar. Tuberculum is the small version of tūber, 'a lump' — so a tuberculum is 'a little lump'. Add -ar, the ending that means 'to do with', and you get 'to do with little lumps'. The disease is named that way because TB leaves small hard lumps in the lung.
