The adjective from tuber. It says one of two things. Most often: this plant has tubers, or grows from them — a tuberous begonia, tuberous roots. Gardeners use it as a label that tells you how to handle the plant: you lift a tuberous plant in autumn, store the fat underground part dry over winter, and plant it again in spring. Less often it means simply lumpy, swollen, shaped like a tuber, and that use turns up in botany and in medicine to describe a bumpy surface. It is a technical word — you meet it on seed packets, in gardening books and in biology class, not in ordinary conversation.
