Doing one small thing so that people will believe you are being fair, when really you are not changing anything. A company hires one woman for its all-male board and puts her photo on the website — that is tokenism. The word is always a criticism; nobody describes their own actions this way. It comes up most in talk about race, sex, and disability, and it points at a particular trick: the small act is real, but it exists to be seen, and it takes the pressure off doing the harder work. A person used this way is called 'a token' — 'the token in the advertisement'. Fairly formal, common in news, , and university writing. Note that it accuses people of appearance without substance, so it is a strong thing to say.

組成token + -ism. A 'token' is a small thing that stands for something bigger — a token of thanks, a token gesture. The ending '-ism' turns it into the name of a practice or belief. So: 'the practice of doing token things'.
