You can think of though as a small turn-signal in a sentence: it warns that the two ideas around it don't sit together as smoothly as you'd expect — one of them pushes back against the other. Whether it sits at the front ('though it rained, we went') or gets on at the end ('we went, though'), it's the same little 'but expect a bump here'.
