You can picture a thesis as a claim you put down on the table and then have to defend. You say 'I argue that X', and everything that comes after — the reasons, the examples, the chapters — is there to hold that one claim up. All three uses circle around that laid-down claim: it can be one sentence, or it can grow into a two-hundred-page book.
