    An argument or point of disagreement — 'a bone of contention' is the main thing two people or groups keep arguing over. Used more formally, 'contention' can also mean an opinion someone argues strongly for, as in 'my contention is that we should wait.' 'In contention' means still having a real chance of winning something.
