Picture someone standing behind a counter, moving things through their hands one at a time and keeping the number: notes flicked across, each one counted out loud or under the breath, the total written down. The job is not to decide anything — it is to handle the items and get the count right. That figure, the trusted counter at the window, can be held as the picture inside 'teller'. It explains the odd-looking family too: this 'tell' is the older 'tell' that means count, the same one hiding in 'tell the time' and in an ATM, an teller machine.

Recorded from the late 15th century as 'one who pays, receives, and counts money', an agent noun from 'tell' in its secondary sense 'to count, enumerate'. The specifically bank-clerk use settles in during the 19th century, and 'automated teller machine' (about 1968, shortened to ATM by 1974) comes straight from it.
