An ATM is a machine in a wall or a small booth, usually outside a bank or in a shop or station, that lets you take cash from your own account without a person behind a window. You put in a card, type your secret number, and the machine gives you notes. The letters stand for Automated Teller Machine. A teller is the bank worker who used to count out your money; the machine does that job by itself. Though actually, almost nobody says the long name. People say ATM, or in Britain cash machine or cashpoint. In Taiwan the English letters ATM are what you will hear, as if they were already a local word. The same three letters can mean other things — scientists use atm for a unit of air pressure, and in messages atm can mean at the moment — but Where is the ATM? means the money machine.
