A telecommuter is a person who works from home — or from anywhere away from the office — and stays connected to the company by computer, email, phone and video calls. They are on the staff and have a boss and colleagues; they simply do not travel in to sit at a desk in the company building. The word carries a small joke inside it that is worth seeing. A commuter is someone who travels to work every day, on the train or the bus or in the car. A telecommuter 'commutes' too — but the only thing that travels is the work, down a wire. The journey has been replaced by a connection. It is a countable noun: a telecommuter, two telecommuters. The company end of it is 'telecommuting', and the verb is 'telecommute'. The word feels a bit of its time. It was born around 1970, became fashionable in the 1990s, and then 2020 happened and the whole world started saying 'remote worker', 'working from home', or just 'WFH'. Today 'telecommuter' turns up mainly in job advertisements, company policy documents, tax forms and older articles — and it sounds slightly formal or American when it does. If you are describing yourself, 'I work from home' or 'I work remotely' is what people actually say.

    遠距工作者、在家上班的員工。台灣現在幾乎都直接講「遠端工作」、「在家工作」或 WFH;telecommuter 這個字比較舊、比較正式,多出現在人事文件或徵才廣告裡。

組成tele- ('far off') + commuter ('someone who travels to work regularly'). The -er ending marks the person who does it. So, literally, someone who commutes from far away — except the commuting happens electronically.
