Telecommuting is the practice of working from home, or from somewhere else away from the office, while staying connected to the company by computer, email, phone and video calls. Note that the definition line above describes the person; the word itself names the arrangement — the -ing form is the activity. So you talk about a telecommuting policy, telecommuting arrangements, two days of telecommuting a week. As a noun it is uncountable: 'telecommuting has saved the company a fortune in rent', not 'a telecommuting'. It is also the -ing form of the verb telecommute: 'She's been telecommuting since March.' The idea inside the word is the same small joke as in telecommuter. Commuting is the daily journey to work; telecommuting keeps the journey word but sends the work down a wire instead of moving the body. The American writer who coined it in the 1970s was thinking about the oil crisis — cars, petrol, traffic — as much as about computers. A word about how it feels now. Telecommuting sounds formal and slightly dated. It survives in company handbooks, government reports, job adverts and academic writing. In ordinary speech since 2020 people say 'remote work', 'working from home', or 'WFH'. Both are correct; one sounds like a policy document and the other sounds like a person talking.
