Picture two people who are far too far apart to shout — different cities, different countries — and a line, a signal or a wave carrying what one says all the way to the other, arriving in the same second. The word holds two pieces at once: 'tele' (far off) and 'communication' (sending messages back and forth). So the picture can be held as distance being cancelled by a signal: phone calls, radio, television, the internet, all the wires and towers in between, and the whole industry built to keep that traffic moving.

First recorded in 1932, taken from French 'telecommunication'. The 'tele-' element is Greek in origin: 'tele' = 'far off, at or to a distance', and by the 19th-20th centuries it had also come to stand for the telegraph, the telephone and (from 1928) television.
1932 年從法文 telecommunication 借進英文。前面的 tele- 來自希臘文，本義就是「遠、隔著一段距離」；十九、二十世紀又順勢代表了電報、電話，1928 年起還代表電視。所以這個字拆開來看幾乎就是它的定義：把 communication（訊息往來）加上「遠距離」這個條件。同一家人還有 telephone（遠的聲音）、telescope（看遠的東西）、television（遠的影像），一起記很好認。
