A group of people who are brought together for a limited time to work on one particular problem, and who usually stop meeting once that work is done.

You can think of a task force as people pulled out of their usual places, tied together for one job, aimed at one problem, and let go again when it is done. The job gives the group its shape, and the end of the job ends the group.
