A squadron is a unit inside an air force or a navy — a group of aircraft, or a group of , that work together under one commander. In an air force it is usually somewhere around twelve to twenty-four planes, though the number changes from country to country and from war to war, so do not memorise a number. In a navy it is a group of ships, smaller than a fleet. The word is also used for some army units, especially cavalry and armoured units (tanks), which is where it started — a squadron of horsemen. Outside the military, people borrow it for a large group moving together, half joking: 'a squadron of reporters', 'a squadron of aunties'. That use is not formal writing; it is the kind of thing you say. Note that a squadron is a real named organisation with a number — 'the 101st Squadron' — not just any pile of planes that happen to be flying.
