Tajikistan is a country in Central Asia. Uzbekistan and are to the north and west, Afghanistan is to the south, and China is to the east. The capital is . It is small and very mountainous — the Pamir mountains cover most of it, so only a little of the land can be farmed, and a great many people leave to work abroad, mostly in Russia, and send money home. It used to be part of the Soviet Union and became independent in 1991, and then went through a hard civil war in the 1990s. The main language is , which is close to Persian, and Russian is still widely used. As a name it is always capital T, never takes 'the', and takes no article: 'He works in Tajikistan', not 'in the Tajikistan'. For a person from there you can say , or Tajikistani if you specifically mean a citizen rather than someone of the people.
組成Tajik + -istan. That ending -istan is Persian for 'land of, place of' — so the name simply means 'land of the Tajiks'. Once you see it, you can read half the map of Central Asia.
