A very small amount of something. It is informal, and it almost always appears as 'a tad'.

The smallest helping you can still call a helping — the drop of milk that only just colours the tea. Once you have a word for an amount that small, you can also use it for a difference that small.
First recorded in 1877 meaning a young or small child, probably a shortened form of tadpole; the 'small amount' meaning is first recorded in 1915.
