A superbug is a — usually a kind of bacteria — that ordinary medicines can no longer kill. Antibiotics used to stop it; now they do not, because the has changed. This makes ordinary infections dangerous again, and it is why superbugs are most feared in hospitals, where sick people, open wounds and many antibiotics are all in one place. MRSA is the famous example. The word is journalists' English rather than doctors' English: newspapers and TV say superbug, while doctors write 'antibiotic-resistant bacteria' or 'multidrug-resistant organism'. It is countable — a superbug, superbugs — and it carries fear with it, so writers use it when they want the reader to worry. In loose everyday use people sometimes call any nasty flu or stomach virus going round the office a superbug, which is not really correct, since 'bug' there just means any . And the 'super' is a warning, not praise: the is powerful in a way that is bad for us. There is also a completely separate old use where Superbug is a nickname for the VW Beetle car, but that is not this word.
