1. 1

A suntrap is a small outdoor place that catches a lot of sun and stays warm, because walls, fences, trees or buildings around it block the wind but let the light in. Think of a corner of a garden, a small back yard, a balcony, or a seat against a south-facing wall: at two in the afternoon it is much hotter there than three metres away. The word is mostly British, and it carries a happy feeling — in a cool, grey, windy country, finding a suntrap is a small piece of luck. People say it about their own garden with some pride: 'that corner is a real suntrap'. Estate agents love it in for houses. It is used loosely too, sometimes just meaning any place that gets hot in the sun, and here it can turn negative — a car, a room with big windows, a greenhouse can be called a suntrap when the point is that it gets uncomfortably hot. So the same word can be a compliment about a garden and a complaint about a bedroom. It is a countable noun, and it is written as one word, though you will sometimes see 'sun trap' in two words, which is also accepted. In Taiwan, where students often want shade instead of sun, this word can feel strange — remember it comes from a place where people chase the sun.
