The picture behind this word is a steamroller — the very heavy machine with a huge round drum that presses a new road flat. To steamroll something is to flatten it that way. But almost nobody uses it for real roads. Nearly every time you meet it, it is about people. If you steamroll someone, you push past them by sheer weight: you keep talking, you ignore what they say, you use your power, and their opinion is simply flattened. It does not mean you argued well. It means they never got a fair turn. You can also steamroll a plan or a law through a meeting — force it through fast so nobody can stop it. In sport and games it can be gentler and even admiring: a team steamrolled the other side means they won hugely and easily. The word is informal and lively; you would say it to a friend, and you would not usually put it in a polite business email. Americans say steamroll; steamroller is used as the verb too, especially in Britain, and both are correct.
