A sorehead is someone who is angry and unpleasant in a way that is out of proportion — usually because they lost something, or did not get what they wanted, and cannot let it go. The key idea is not just anger; it is sulking anger, the kind that spoils things for everyone around. A person who loses a game and then complains all evening about the referee is a sorehead. This is an American word, and it is old-fashioned now. Younger speakers are more likely to say "sore loser" (for the game situation) or "grouch" (for someone permanently bad-tempered). You will still meet sorehead in older novels, in newspapers writing about , and from older people. It is insulting but not a strong swear — the tone is , like calling someone a baby about it. Notice the related use of "sore" on its own: in American English, "he's still sore about it" means he is still upset and resentful. That sense of sore, not the pain-in-your-body sense, is the one hiding inside sorehead.
