Sorely means very much, and it always leans towards something bad or lacking. You are not sorely happy. You are sorely disappointed, sorely , sorely missed, sorely in need of help. There is an inside the word — it comes from sore, and it kept that feeling even after it stopped meaning physical pain. It is formal and a little literary. In everyday speech people say "really" or "badly" instead; sorely turns up in writing, in speeches, in news reports, and in fixed phrases. Learn those phrases as whole units, because sorely does not go freely with any word you like: sorely missed (said about someone who has left or died), sorely needed, sorely , sorely tried (meaning someone's patience has been pushed hard), sorely lacking, sorely disappointed. Two of these are worth extra attention. "Sorely " is about wanting to do something you probably should not — it is often said with a smile. From Old English sārlīċe; sore + -ly.
sore（疼痛的）加 -ly，源自古英文 sārlīċe：痛切地、非常。
組成sore (in the old sense of painful, grievous) + -ly (the ending that turns a word into a how-word). It goes all the way back to Old English sārlīċe, so it has been in the language since before English looked like English.
