Picture a small horse that has never pulled a cart. It is washed, brushed, its mane plaited, and then led into a ring so that judges and a crowd can look at it. It may be a very good animal, and it may jump a clean round. But every arrangement around it — the feeding, the grooming, the walk into the ring — is there so that it will be seen. Hold that picture and the joke about people comes out of it by itself: the person called a show pony is the one groomed for the ring.
