A shopfitter is a person whose job is to put the inside of a shop together — the shelves, the counter, the lights, the signs, the rails for clothes — and to change all that when a shop wants a new look. The short dictionary line sometimes makes this sound like the name of the job itself; the job is shopfitting, and the shopfitter is the worker who does it. It is a British trade word. You see it in job ads and on the side of vans. In ordinary American English, people are more likely to talk about someone who puts in store fittings, or just a carpenter who works on shops. A shopfitter is not the shop owner, and not only the person who draws a pretty picture of the shop: they fit the pieces in place. Though actually, a lot of the work is taking the old shop apart first, not only putting the new one in.
