A shopaholic is someone who loves going shopping and buys far more than they need, almost as if they cannot stop. People say it with a smile, often about themselves: “I'm a shopaholic” means they came home with bags they did not plan to buy. Magazines, ads, and friends use it. It is informal. You would not put it on a hospital form. The joke is built on alcoholic, the serious word for a person who cannot stop drinking alcohol: we took the ending -aholic and stuck it on shop. Nobody is saying shopping is the same as that illness. Though actually, some people do feel they cannot control their buying, and then doctors use other, more careful words. For everyday talk, shopaholic stays a light, slightly guilty joke.

組成From shop + -aholic. The ending -aholic was taken from alcoholic (alcohol + -ic). Alcohol came into English from Medieval Latin, and that Latin word came from Arabic al-kuḥūl. Shop comes from Old English scoppa, through Middle English schoppe.
