A chocoholic is someone who loves chocolate so much that they eat a lot of it, almost as if they cannot leave it alone. The word is a joke built on a serious one: we took the ending of alcoholic, the word for a person who cannot stop drinking alcohol, and stuck it onto chocolate. Nobody is saying chocolate is as dangerous as alcohol; people say chocoholic with a smile, often about themselves. “I’m a chocoholic” is a light way to admit you always want one more piece. You hear it in everyday talk, in ads, and among friends. It is informal. You would not put it in a medical report. Though actually, some people do feel they cannot stop once the chocolate is open, so the joke sits on top of something a bit real.
