A sextuplet is one of six babies born at the same time to the same mother. People also say the sextuplets for the whole set of six. The word is built from sextuple (sixfold) + -et, on the same pattern as triplet, quadruplet, and . It is a rare, news-style word: most families never need it. In careful talk, one child is a sextuplet; the six together are sextuplets. Students sometimes use sextuplet for the whole group, the way they might say “a twin” when they mean both children. Though actually, musicians also call six notes packed into the time of four a sextuplet — that is another use of the same spelling, about rhythm, not babies. This entry is the birth meaning.
