Triplets are three babies born at the same time to the same mother, and one of those three children is a triplet. You will almost always meet it in the plural — 'she had triplets' — because the whole point is the set. The singular is used when you point at one of them: 'my sister is a triplet.' Note that they do not have to look alike; unlike the popular idea of twins, triplets can be quite different from each other. English builds a whole ladder here: twins (2), triplets (3), (4), (5), and so on, with 'quads' as the everyday short form. The word has a second life in music, where a triplet is three notes squeezed into the time normally taken by two — a music teacher will use this daily. And in poetry, a triplet is three lines that rhyme together. More loosely, in maths and computing, any group of three values can be called a triplet.
組成triple (three of something) + -et (a small one, or a member of a set). Built the same way people later built 'quadruplet' and 'quintuplet'. Behind triple is Latin tres, 'three'.
